~ A Short Introduction ~

Beaufort's history is rich and exciting.
From the Paleo-Indians who first lived here about 15,000 years ago,
then the Spanish arriving in the early 1500's, followed by the French and others.
Cotton and Indigo farming transformed Beaufort into one of the
wealthiest towns of it's size in the Nation.
The Civil War era brought a swift end to the prosperity, but because of the early
Federal occupation, Beaufort and much of the surrounding area were not destroyed.
This accounts for why Beaufort has such a large and well preserved historic district.
Movie makers have also discovered this area,
and some of the biggest block busters in Hollywood were filmed here.
Forrest Gump,The Prince of Tides, GI Jane... just to name a few.
Many US Marines retire in the Low Country after their first contact through MCAS,
the Navy Hospital or Parris Island, one of the nations finest Recruit training stations.
When it comes to nature, the entire area is dedicated to preservation.
The people here enjoy fishing, shrimping, oysters and blue crabs from Beaufort's many rivers
and the Atlantic Ocean. There is no better tasting seafood than fresh caught!
The pristine ecosystem provides the Artist and Photographer scenes found nowhere else.
Each new tide brings with it a unique and exciting look.
Hunting Island State Park, one of the most popular State Parks in South Carolina
and the world famous Hunting Island Lighthouse are also located here.
With over 5,000 acres of unspoiled "natural" beach and wildlife habitat,
it provides a "back to nature" experience so seldom seen with other beach areas.
It's easy to see why so many have come to experience the lifestyle
and charm here in the Beaufort LowCountry...
the "Queen of the Sea Islands".
