THUNDERSTORMS

In Case you didn't notice

Coosaw Island : copyright 1999 : R.J. Sorensen

Lightning comes in an array of colors and shapes in the Beaufort area, and is ideal for some very unusual and breathtaking pictures. Just watching the many lightning strikes can be a beautiful sight, but do so from the indoors and away from the window, as the forces of nature are very powerful. The Lowcountry has magnificent storms, with beautiful strikes on most. It just proves that there is beauty in everything, even the frightening things. This shot was captured on Coosaw Island, in late July. I call this one...
"Beauty and the Beast."

15 second exposure : Shell Point : copyright 1999 : R.J. Sorensen

This was a 15 second exposure, capturing the many strikes on the water, just off  the Shell Point area. You can see being outside or in a boat is not a very good idea. Seek shelter, as these storms can really be deadly. Enjoy them from safety, inside a building or in a vehicle, not under tall structures or trees.

Strike below was on Coosaw Island in late August. The thunder from this one is on "The Storm Is Over" CD release by Mildred Daniels. This strike took out some equipment in the IVAP studio, but we made it.

If  home, unplug your TV set and computer. Also make sure you have surge protection in this area.

These strikes were on Broad River, in late August.
This was a 5 second exposure.

As beautiful as these are, remember the power these storms have. They can kill you if you are in the open area.  Please take these seriously. It is a good idea to carry a battery powered radio with you whenever on the water or away from communication, that way you will always be informed. Candles or a couple of hurricane lamps are a good investment, as these storms often knock out power for a while. These storms do not have to be a frightening experience if you just follow these rules,
then let yourself admire the "Beauty and the Beast".

Rules to follow during a Thunderstorm

If caught outside or in a boat, get as low as possible
and away from tall objects.
Stay away from windows and open porches or decks.
Do not use the telephone.
Do not bathe or shower during a storm or use a hair dryer.
If golfing, get off the course. Don't chance it, the course will still be there!
If in a vehicle, remember you are safe, turn on headlights, and don't panic.
Unplug electric devices, and use surge protection on electric lines.

Do not go near fallen power lines. Report to officials.
If a power line falls on your vehicle, and you are inside it, stay there.
Help will come. You are safe inside, DO NOT get out of your vehicle.
